First Date Fashion Advice For Women – What To Wear
We’ve discussed many dos and don’ts of dating, but we’ve never really talked about date fashion. As women, that’s almost always the first thing we worry about right? “I have a date on Saturday night!!!” The jubilation is immediately followed by panic: “What am I going to wear?”
What To Wear On A First Date
Nothing in our wardrobes seems appropriate and shopping attempts seem pretty useless as well because nothing seems good enough. While we can’t help you pick out the exact outfit you should wear on your first date, we do have some tips that might help you make up your mind.
- If you’re completely out of ideas and in panic mode…first of all – Relax! You can’t go wrong with basics. A black dress is always a good bet for a date. Or if you like, a black skirt with a white short is good for work and for the date after work too. For a more casual outfit, you could either wear a sun dress or jeans. Jeans with a black or white tee is always a winner. Have a fresh look at the basics in your wardrobe and try to mix and match for a new look.
- Dressing comfortably is very important for a first date. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing the prettiest blouse in your wardrobe, if it makes you uncomfortable, it’s not worth it. You’re likely to be a little nervous on the first date so why add to it by wearing a blouse that reveals a little more cleavage than you’re comfortable with? Wear clothing that’s comfortable and concentrate on the date instead. Also, when you’re comfortable, you automatically feel more confident too.
- As much as you might want him to like you, I think the revealing clothes are best left out on a first date. Showing too much cleavage or leg on a first date can often send out the wrong signals without you even realizing it. So I’m not saying dress like a grandma…being stylish and sexy on a first date is great. It’s better to leave some things to his imagination right? After all it’s only the first date!
- The right accessories can add new life to old outfits. So if you’re wearing the black dress, try wearing some bright beads to add some color to the outfit. Or if you’re going the casual way in jeans, try on a nice belt. Shoes, belts, jewelry, bags, hair accessories etc can add a touch of style to your otherwise boring outfit, so don’t be afraid to invest in some classic accessories.
- This always helps a woman narrow down her options from 100 to at least 10. Fancy dinner calls for dressing up while a coffee date can be more casual. Dress for your date depending on what you’re doing. If you’re heading out for a picnic in the park, jeans and a well fitted (not tight!) tank is good but a dress or a dressy top with jeans might be more appropriate for dinner.
- If you can’t pick an outfit, start by picking what you’d like to accentuate about your body. Depending on your body shape, you can choose outfits that highlight your face/ legs/ arms/ shoulders etc. To find out what shape you are, click here and if you need help with dressing according to your body shape, click here. Make sure you wear well-fitted clothes. Too tight clothes can make you look like you’re bursting at the seams while a sack doesn’t do much to accentuate your figure either.
- Your make up again depends on your outfit and where you’re going. For some basic make up tips click here [link to make up tips article]. Just remember, your make up should compliment your outfit, not overwhelm it. When in doubt use neutral shades and light make up with a lipstick that draws attention to your face. The right make up can go a long way in getting the perfect look.
